A Selection of Mysteries
Do you love a good mystery? You're not alone. Look at the mystery section in your local bookstore—which, of course, you've already done if you're reading this.
How did we choose the books below? No mystery about that. These are five books that we like and that we think would make good gifts for the mystery lover in your life. They aren't "the best," whatever that means. One of them, The Nine Tailors, qualifies as a classic. Another, In the Presence of the Enemy, just might someday. Murder on the Prowl appeals to mystery fans and cat lovers alike. All offer good reading, a challenging puzzle, and a glimpse into the special world of the mystery, where there is a moral order, and at least some people in the world act courageously and honorably when that order is violated. That vision of order is the underlying pleasure of the mystery—something we can all hope for and aspire to, even if we never quite achieve it.
Rita Mae Brown
$16.77
Rita Mae and the author-cat Sneaky Pie Brown create another charming Mrs. Murphy mystery. The animals' comments on the humans are worth the price of admission, as are the many wonderful characters in the fictitious town of Crozet, Virginia.
Elizabeth George
$5.59
Elizabeth George creates complex plots and memorable characters. Like other masters of the genre, she breaks down barriers between mystery and literature. This is one of her best.
Ellis Peters
$4.79
The Brother Cadfael series of mysteries never fails to delight, mainly because of Cadfael himself—a Benedictine monk/detective with a worldly past and a complex spiritual present. The Heretic's Apprentice is one among many, but especially interesting because of the religious issues that are its center.
Gillian Roberts
The Bluest Blood : An Amanda Pepper Mystery
$15.40
With her usual wit and skill, Gillian Roberts gives us Amanda Pepper, Philadelphia,
and mystery full of surprises.
Dorothy L. Sayers
$8.00
This Lord Peter Wimsey classic is still one of the best available. Set in the flat, dreary Fen country of East Anglia (England) it conveys a sense of mystery unlike any other book. Worth reading again and again.
