Five Great Books for Cat Lovers
Cat people are a special breed—at least we tend to think so. We used to set ourselves apart because most people in the U.S. had dogs, and a lot of people don't like cats. Now that cats are the Majority Pet (even in the White House), it has become a little harder to think of ourselves as a Misunderstood Minority. Still, we and our pets are special, just as dogs and dog lovers are special in their way. Unless you really dislike cats, there is nothing more comforting than a purring cat on your lap, on your bed, or in that special warm spot in your living room. Cats are magical animals, with their own approach to life which is endlessly fascinating to watch. They also love to watch us. One of these days we will both really understand each other. Until then, here are five books which will increase your appreciation of the cats who share your life.
Roger Caras
A Cat Is Watching: A Look at the Way Cats See Us
$8.00
An in-depth discussion of cat behavior, and an extraordinary attempt to think like a cat. One can't really do this, of course, but Caras comes close.
James Herriot
$11.87
James Herriot set the standard by which all other animal storytellers are judged. Here is a fine collection of pieces about cats he encountered during his career.
May Sarton
$6.36
May Sarton's wonderful book about the transformation of a streetwise, tough cat into a loving "fur person." All of us have known cats like this. I have personally lived with two.
Jean-Claude Suares
$11.16
Beautiful photo essay on cats and their friends—ranging from mice and birds, to other cats, to dogs, horses, and humans. The photos are very close to miraculous.
Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
The Tribe of Tiger: Cats and Their Culture
$22.95
A fascinating book about cats and their interactions with each other, other animals, and humans.
